More than just needles—the many methods of traditional Chinese medicine

To most of the world, Chinese medicine is pretty much synonymous with acupuncture. Acupuncture is certainly one of TCM’s most important modalities, but readers might be surprised to know that in China, not only do herbs and massage get used even more than acupuncture, but there are tons of other methods and modalities that are frequently used in the clinic and at home.

The aim of this section is to help explain some of the unexpected, unusual, and sometimes even downright weird things you may encounter if you seek help from a TCM physician. It will also help you if you just saw a TCM doc, and you’re wondering what the heck he or she just did to you (or sold to you) in the clinic!

Before we start, something to keep in mind: there is no one, best way to treat patients in TCM. Some doctors prefer needles, others prefer herbs, and still others may have achieved mastery using their hands and nothing else. Yet other doctors may prefer these things in combination, or stick to different methods altogether. With that in mind, I hope you enjoy this tour through China's wide variety of methods for healing body and mind.
